Theology with specialisation in Contemporary Systematic Theology

Students who graduate will hope to have acquired:
• an in-depth understanding of major themes in Systematic Theology in the light of Vatican II, including: Faith and Revelation, Trinity, Creation, Christology Ecclesiology, Grace, and Sacramentology.

• an awareness of the contribution of some significant Catholic theologians to the renewal of Catholic theology in the twentieth-century, e.g. Karl Rahner, Henri de Lubac, Joseph Ratzinger, Yves Congar, and others.

• an ability to assess some of the more recent developments in systematic theology e.g. religious pluralism and contextual theologies.


1 year.

Course Structure
Six modules [three per semester] of 20 hours duration per module.
• 10 weeks per module.
• Seminars held on Monday and Wednesday evenings:
• Semester 1: Monday: 4pm – 6pm / Wednesday: 4pm-6pm & 7pm-9pm.

Subjects taught

Seminar topics include (but are not limited to):

• Resourcement and Renewal in Twentieth-Century Systematic Theology

• Theologies of Grace: Towards a Renewed Theological Anthropology

• Ecclesiology: Communion in Context;

• New Directions in Systematic Theology

Thesis [15,000 words] on an agreed topic in the area of Contemporary Systematic Theology.
