Human Resource & Performance Management in Healthcare

Leading people and teams is a core function of a manager's role and research shows that effective people management and developing high performing health teams directly affects patient/service user experiences and outcomes. Healthcare services are delivered to people through people. This programme aims to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and competencies to manage people in healthcare especially those working in and across a complex array of service delivery teams.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply existing and explore new theoretical frameworks; understand regulatory requirements and engage with subject matter experts.

They will consolidate their learning using simulation and directly applying their analytical skills to the work environment via practice-based module assignments.

Face-to-face and online learning resources will support participants learning and experience.

The Professional Diploma in Human Resource and Performance Management in Healthcare is delivered over nine months with three in-class days per module (nine in-class days in total). On-site classes run from 9am until 5pm and all teaching takes place at the Institute of Leadership, Sandyford, Dublin 18.

Learning Outcomes
The Professional Diploma in Human Resource and Performance Management in Healthcare aims to:
•Develop participants' capacity to understand how leading and managing people and teams contributes to the overall functioning of the healthcare system, organisations, organisational performance and patient/service user outcomes.
•Develop an understanding of the range of relevant people and team management frameworks and knowledge leading to enhanced and sustained performance.
Apply skills of leading people and teams particularly in relation to the management of individuals, professional, multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary teams.
•Develop competence in understanding and responding to the healthcare environment, in particular health economics; regulation and employment law; resourcing and talent management; strategic human resources management and the principles of organisational and clinical governance in leading effective innovative services.
•Demonstrate the ability to challenge assumptions and to understand the changing environment, question processes, policies and procedures in people management at an individual, team, organisational and systems levels – nationally and internationally.
•Develop participant's people management and leadership skills, insight, confidence and awareness necessary to identify and implement evidence-based contemporary people management practices.
•Develop a strategic and action-orientated mindset that enables participants to critically assess and reflect on the evolving environment with the capacity to implement learning in practice.
•Develop participants knowledge and skills of reflection and to understand how this contributes to effective people and team management and well being of patients and services in complex adaptive systems.

Entry requirements

All applicants should hold a primary degree and be working in the healthcare sector. As there is an emphasis on clinical leadership, ideally applicants should be working in a clinical setting.

For applicants who don't hold a primary degree, there is a recognition of prior learning (RPL) pathway outlined below.

Recognition of prior learning

The RCSI regulations for RPL provide a process and framework for validating and placing a value on prior learning for the purpose of:

A. Admission

B. Exemption

C. Advanced entry/transfer between programmes

The EU Council (2012) defines validation as a process of confirmation by an authorised body that an individual has acquired learning outcomes measured against a relevant standard which consists of four distinct phases:

1.Identification – dialogue of particular experiences of an
individual

2.Documentation – making visible the individuals experiences

3.Assessment – formal assessment of these experiences

4.Certification – the results of the assessment

These regulations are intended for use by the RCSI staff and faculty involved in admissions processes relating to applicants seeking assessment of their prior learning for the purposes of admission, exemption or advanced entry/transfer between programmes and to provide clarity and direction for candidates during their application process.

This programme is delivered over a nine-month period and incorporates three contact days per module (nine contact days in total).

Subjects taught

Modules
Module 1: Developing and Demonstrating People Management in Healthcare (10 ECTS) The aim of this module is to provide participants with the knowledge and comprehension of key elements of people management and employee relations methodologies and to apply these to their practice. There will be an emphasis on psychological approaches and practice-based activities.

Module 2: Leading People and Managing Resources in the Clinical Context (10 ECTS) The aim of this module is to assist healthcare professionals and managers to become familiar with key team development dynamics and to apply these to multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary teams. There is an emphasis on managing team processes such as conflict resolution, negotiations, coaching, communications and enhancing resilience.

Module 3: Leading Change and Quality Improvement in Health Services (10 ECTS) In this module, participants will develop an understanding of the regulatory environment and the roles played by key stakeholders in employee relations. It will focus on regulation, clinical governance and new approaches to equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Applications for the Professional Diploma in Human Resource and Performance Management in Healthcare are accepted on a rolling basis. Currently, there are two intakes each year, in Autumn and Spring.

•The tuition includes all resources, including core textbooks, access to our award-winning online learning portal and access to extensive RCSI-only databases.

•The tuition fee is also inclusive of an NUI fee.

•Fees are payable via instalments or in one lump sum.
