Religious Education

Programme Description:
The social, cultural and religious context within which Religious Education now takes place within the island of Ireland has changed considerably within the second half of the twentieth century.

Entry requirements

Level 8 Undergraduate Degree (H2.2) or equivalent which includes a significant element of Religious Education, Catechetics or Theology. For students without the relevant academic qualification but with relevant previous experience, recognition for prior learning can be awarded.


Stage 1 modules may be offered annually subject to a minimum intake of numbers, while Stage 2 will be offered annually.

This programme is suitable for candidates who wish to progress further in their professional sector and are already in employment. It aims to enhance professional knowledge and it is designed to provide a student-centred, accessible, flexible, coherent framework for the personal, professional and academic development of participants. Module Options Stage 1: All modules = 15 ECTS (NFQ, Level 9)

• Religion and Belief in a Changing World
• Religious Education: Linking Life and Faith
• Spirituality and Religious Education
• Religious Education in Contexts of Diversity
• Religious Education: Resources and Approaches in a Digital Age

Module Options Stage 2 - both modules are core modules
• Advanced Research Module
• Dissertation Module

Students successfully completing 45 ECTS of modules in Stage 1 of the programme continue to Stage 2 where they undertake the Advanced Research Module and the Dissertation Module and exit with an Master of Arts (Religious Education).

Alternatively, students may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate on successfully completing 30 ECTS (2 modules) or with a Postgraduate Diploma on successfully completing 60 ECTS (4 modules).

Students may also study standalone modules and exit with 15 ECTS (NFQ, Level 9) upon successful completion of a module.
