Master Of Education (MEd) Sen Literacy Specialist Option

This M-Level specialist option is aimed at students who wish to develop the specialist knowledge and skills required to teach children with dyslexia. Dyslexic-type difficulties are recognised as being the largest single cause of literacy difficulties. Students can opt to do one of the following pathways:

• MEd Teaching Children with Specific Literacy Difficulties with Associate Membership of the British Dyslexia Association ( AMBDA) and an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC)

• MEd Addressing Difficulties in Literacy Development For both pathways all modules below must be completed, but to achieve AMBDA and APC you must complete added elements along with each module. All modules listed are accredited by the British Dyslexia Association.

Entitlement To The Award Of Master Of Education (MED)
The award of Master of Education will be made to candidates
who have successfully completed 180 points at M-level, through
completion of four taught modules and a research dissertation.
The degree of Master of Education may be awarded with
distinction on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.
Students who have accumulated 60 points on the MEd may
graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate. Students who have
accumulated 120 points on the MEd may graduate with a
Postgraduate Diploma.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally hold a relevant 2:2 Honours degree or above in a related discipline, and preferably a professional teaching qualification. Please note The British Dyslexia Association permit graduates who are not qualified teachers, but have relevant experience in an educational setting, to achieve APS (Approved Practitioner Status) and to proceed to work towards the award of AMBDA. It is important that applicants who are not qualified teachers understand that the degree does not give them QTS (qualified teacher status). Applicants who do not meet the requirements of a relevant 2:2 Honours degree or above in a related discipline will be considered on an individual basis, where there is evidence of relevant experience. Applicants may be required to attend an interview to determine their suitability for entry.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: All of the modules in this degree are completed remotely. Students who enrol in this MEd must ensure they have suitable technology to take part fully in the sessions – a home computer, headphones and microphone, web cam and Wi-Fi speed of at least 512 kbps. Students who are not qualified teachers must ensure that they can meet the BDA criteria for experience in professional practice for the award of APS. To apply for ATS or APS students must 'have at least two years' experience working professionally with the appropriate age range of learners up to and including 18 years of age by the time of application. This may be full-time or equivalent total periods of part-time professional engagement'.

Course fee

The course fee for 2018-2019 will be £917 per taught module and £1834 for dissertation (UK/ Republic of Ireland and EU students only. Additional accreditation fees apply on this pathway which are normally paid at the start of each module; EDC9095: £900; EDC7024: £300 (optional); and EDC7030, £999 (optional). International fees apply for international students.
