Introduction

DIT's innovative MBS in Retail Management is a unique specialist post-graduate degree and the only masters programme of its kind offered in the Republic of Ireland for graduates seeking to break the exciting and fast-paced retail industry. The full-time masters programme is twelve months in duration and is delivered by an expert academic team with strong industry connections and an established reputation for developing future retail industry leaders.

This master programme is suited to graduates who wish to pursue a career in the most dynamic business sector, deepen their understanding of retail business processes, and broaden their perspective on retail management. Students are exposed to the latest thinking and the newest developments in retail management and technology with an intense week long Retail Symposium in January and an International Retail Study Tour Week in early Summer making this programme a career-compatible and applied masters.

Course Content

This career-compatible and applied masters' programme actively engages the student in a critical examination of contemporary retail management issues that shape a company's strategic policy. Students are also exposed to the latest creative thinking and innovations in retail management and technology. The one-week intense immersion in the retail symposium, and international retail study tour week allows the student to fully engage with international practitioners and academics, offering deep understanding of strategic retail issues.

Entry requirements

NFQ Level 8 Business Graduates (Minimum award 2.2) or Non-Business Graduates (Minimum award 2.1),or holders of equivalent professional qualifications. Applicants with considerable and relevant retail experience will also be considered. The MBS is particularly suited to those who wish to pursue a career in retailing, deepen their understanding of retail business processes, and broaden their perspective on retail management. All applications will be assessed on their own merit. The MBS has been host to students from diverse cultures, including the UK, Holland, France, Bulgaria, Canada, India, China and Vietnam who contribute to the richness of the educational experience.The programme is conducted in English so a strong working knowledge of English(Minimum 6.5 IELTS or equivalent) is required.

Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate programmes satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the programme of study applications will be assessed based on your academic grades and may also take into account your work/life experience. Applicants may also be required to attend for interview for specific programmes.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the this masters programme pursue careers at management level in large scale retail companies, family businesses or in organisations supplying such companies. Previous graduates have secured management positions in varying roles throughout the services sector to include category management, retail analyst, local government planners, retail buyers, logistics, digital marketing and retail management along with a number of entrepreneurs and retail business owners.

International Study Tour Week

Students visit established international markets investigating the latest innovations and trends in retailing. They are hosted by both international partner universities and leading national and international retailers, where they engage with senior managers on key strategic issues. Recent tours have visited the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

Retail Symposium

The Retail Symposium consists of a series of lectures and seminars by experts in their field. A different theme is chosen each year, allowing students to immerse themselves fully in an issue of strategic importance to the sector. The nature of the symposium is inter-active and participative, conducive to a holistic learning experience. Recent themes include: The Multi-Channel Challenge in Retailing, Branding in Retailing, Innovation in Retailing and Entrepreneurship in Retailing

Location: This course is centred at DIT`s state of the Art Aungier Street campus, just a few minutes from the luas light rail system at St Stephens Green and Grafton Street. In addition to the modern library with access to an extensive collection of on-line journals, the campus has world-class IT facilities and excellent lecture theatres.To help communications between Faculty and part-time students, the programme has its own dedicated Intranet site, accessible from home or office, where academic staff and students have a common platform to share information, reading and discussion etc.

Award

Graduates of the course are eligible for the award of Master of Business Studies in Retail Management of the Dublin Institute of Technology.
