The Prof Cert Evidence Based Policy Making & Evaluation will examine the use (and abuse) of different forms of knowledge and evidence in the policy making and implementation process

-Critically analyse the relationship between evidence and policy making

-Design and implement a policy evaluation research project

-Critically analyse the relationship between evidence-based policy making and social scientific research.

The courses are designed for public or private sector employees seeking further training in specialized subjects that are relevant to their working lives.

The courses are particularly suitable for professionals who wish to enhance their professional skills but who may find it difficult to commit to a full Graduate Diploma or Masters programme. These Certificates can also be used as a building-block for candidates who may wish to go on take the MPP programme in stages.

Vision and Values Statement
Students will examine the use (and abuse) of different forms of knowledge and evidence in the policy making and implementation process; the generation and analysis of evidence for policy making and the impact of this on the social scientific research.

The first of these issues is addressed during the opening part of the module. These sessions will examine:

- The role of different forms of evidence in the policy process

- The role of different actors in producing evidence for policy

- The relative weights attached to different types of evidence

- How research interacts with other forms of evidence, such as media opinion, and,

- The challenges of providing evidence for policy making.

The second part of the module the methodologies most commonly employed in evaluation research are examined and their application in a number of evaluation research projects is critiqued. The closing session critically examines the impact which the evidence-based policy making agenda has had on social scientific research.

-Critical awareness of the ways in which evaluation techniques may influence evaluation assessments

-Ability to devise appropriate methods of policy evaluation for a range of assessment tasks

-Capacity to understand and critically assess policy evaluation reports
