MEngSc Electronic & Computer Engineering
Graduate Taught (level 9 nfq, credits 90)
The MEngSc in Electronic & Computer Engineering is a year-long programme designed to provide training for engineers who wish to work at a high level in the electronic and computer sectors worldwide. You will develop an advanced understanding of the theory and technology of modern electronic and computer systems and their business environment. You will build your knowledge through taught modules and project work and you will learn about design, innovation and problem solving at a level significantly beyond that of your primary degree.
Course Description
Designed to meet the demands of modern high technology industries, this MEngSc covers topics from electronic engineering and computer science to business, delivered by internationally renowned academics. The modules that you take will depend on your interests and on your prior education.
Vision and Values Statement
The MEngSc in Electronic and Computer Engineering is a twelve month programme that educates professional engineers who can excel in the burgeoning worldwide electronic and computer sectors. The programme can be taken by graduates with an honours bachelor's degree in electronic engineering or a closely related discipline. The student is provided with a deep understanding of a wide range of topics pertinent to the electronic and computer hardware and software industries. Knowledge and skills are built through a mix of taught courses, laboratory work and a major project. The qualification meets new international requirements for chartered professional engineers. Teaching methods vary, to suit the wide range of subjects. The strong laboratory component allows students to experience the practical side of electronic engineering, while assignments provide design and problem-solving challenges. In the final year, a substantial project draws together many of the separate strands of learning, with a stress on independent learning and communication skills. Throughout the programme there is a strong emphasis on the mathematical and analytical underpinnings of the discipline providing an excellent foundation for entry into advanced research programmes in academia and industry.
Programme Outcomes
Advanced knowledge and understanding of the mathematics, sciences, engineering sciences and technologies underpinning electronic engineering with a special emphasis on computer and communication systems.
The ability to identify, formulate, analyse and solve complex engineering problems.
The ability to perform the detailed design of novel systems and processes using analysis and knowledge of advanced communication and computer systems.
The ability to design and conduct experiments, and apply and evaluate a range of standard and specialised research tools, analytical techniques and methods of enquiry.
The ability to work effectively as an individual and in teams, together with the capacity to undertake lifelong learning, thus offering a foundation for entry into advanced research programmes.
The ability to communicate effectively on complex engineering matters with the engineering community and with society at large.
