Programme Outcomes
This pre-entry career MSc is designed to take the student with excellent basic scientific skills and facilitate them to develop a broad knowledge of clinical biochemistry and how it is integral to the patient's diagnosis, management and outcome.

This one-year, full-time MSc Programme equips graduates with
Clinical biochemistry knowledge including technical and scientific skills aimed at developing clinical judgement. Providing them with a comprehensive overview of biochemical pathways and their relevance in health and disease states;

Quality and accreditation of the clinical biochemistry diagnostic service; including experience of clinical translational research and development.

Applied knowledge and understanding of diagnosis and management of patients from a clinical and scientific perspective;

Techniques utilised in the practice of diagnostic clinical biochemistry, endocrinology and toxicology;

Understanding of clinical areas and interpretation of results profiles in common and complex disease categories;

Critical results reporting.

Entry requirements

A small number of applicants with a first class honours or 2.1 result from the degrees listed below will be shortlisted for interview.

Preference will be given to those with particular relevance to the speciality of clinical biochemistry. For example a clinical project performed in final year of degree. Applicants who possess a science related Masters of a relevant PhD are eligible to apply.

The Masters will be the first year of a 3 year training programme in clinical biochemistry (year 1 academic teaching and training) and 2 years working in a hospital laboratory. Following this training the aim is that these graduates will be in a position to proceed into a substantive clinical biochemist post and take the specialist FRCPath examinations and /or PhD or professional doctorate.

Consideration will be given to a small number of other students wishing to take the Masters, for example those who wish to work in the diagnostic industry in R& D .
