About Us
onsemi is driving energy efficient innovations, empowering customers to reduce global energy use. The company is an industry leading semiconductor manufacturer that helps customers solve their unique design challenges in automotive, communications, computing, consumer, industrial, IoT, and medical markets.
The Depth Sensing business within onsemi’s Intelligent Sensing Group’s (ISG) Automotive Solutions Division (ASD) is the leading provider of low-light sensors based on its solid-state single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology. SPAD and SiPM sensors are a disruptive and enabling technology that replace the aging vacuum tube based photomultiplier, avalanche photodiode and PIN photodiode in a variety of applications including medical imaging, radiation detection, LiDAR and depth sensing for industrial and automotive, both for ADAS and autonomous vehicles. The Depth Sensing business unit has pioneered the production of its sensor technology in high-volume CMOS fabrication facilities delivering unprecedented performance, uniformity, quality, reliability and low cost. Our products enable customers to develop new classes of products with higher performance, better form factor, higher robustness and lower power than previously possible. This position provides the ideal candidate with a unique opportunity to work with a growing, high tech multi-national company involved in the latest technology trends such as autonomous vehicles, industrial and IoT and medical imaging technologies.
onsemi acquired SensL in 2018 expanding their portfolio in automotive sensing to form the Depth Sensing business unit. The acquisition allowed SensL to gain from the wealth of automotive experience in onsemi opening new technology directions. ISG has a decades long heritage of imaging innovation, with our roots in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where the first active pixel sensor was invented, and Kodak where the first digital camera was invented. onsemi has brought together teams from Aptina, Truesense, Cypress, and SensL to create an organization with unmatched breadth and depth.
The Role
onsemi, Depth Sensing Division, has exciting work placement and intern positions available for suitable candidates who are looking to work in a dynamic, export based high tech multinational company, which still retains the unique character, flair and team members of a start-up company. Each intern will be assigned a project which best suits their abilities and personal growth strategies. The Engineering Intern will work with the next generation silicon low light sensors for Medical Imaging, Radiation Detection, 3D Ranging and Sensing LIDAR, High Energy Physics and Biophotonics. The position will suit a competent engineer looking to develop their skillsets working with the engineering team in Cork.
The chosen candidate will report daily to an Engineer in charge of Modelling, Silicon Production, Product Assembly and Test, Sensor Design or Electronics. To allow the intern to further develop their skills, an appropriate project program will be defined which suits the skillsets of the chosen candidate. Typical programs such as test development, test software coding, device physics, IC or PCB design, mechanical modelling and CAD, reliability or product development are potential project topics. Appropriate training will be given to ensure that the candidate is fully equipped to complete their project.
Experience and Skills Desired
- Experience with test equipment, such as multi-meters, power supplies and oscilloscopes and control using software such as LabView
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, understanding circuits and components such as diodes, capacitors, resistors and transistors and their measurement requirements
- Mechanical design and CAD experience
