Tell us a little bit about your role?

The purpose of my role is to perform the duties necessary to support, maintain and develop the SharePoint Infrastructure. This includes; ensuring daily checks are performed and issues are responded to promptly, ensuring incidents and requests logged to our area are dealt with in a timely manner and to a high standard. During the Covid crisis, I gained insight and experience in areas within the Infrastructure Division. Along with my day-to-day role on the SharePoint Infrastructure Team, I was asked to lead a project with another colleague that related to the build and supply of laptops to 3500 users.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

I was able to continue my learning through courses, which help me stay focused and improve my overall skills in numerous areas such as working in a team, collaborating with others, leadership and my ICT knowledge, which means that I am always keeping up to date with new technologies.

What were your reasons for applying for an ICT role in the public sector?

I believe the public sector offers perhaps the best opportunities for the right kind of balance between career and personal life. Generally, the public sector is more reasonable than private industry when it comes to working sensible hours, having time off for emergencies, flexible working patterns, and so on.

Would you recommend a career in the public sector?

The public sector is a huge organisation, with many departments, roles and locations. When I joined, everyone was very welcoming and supportive in my role in the team. Working for a government department can give you a sense of pride in your country, and a sense that you are really contributing to something meaningful. From day one, you are also encouraged to put yourself forward for promotional opportunities, further education and training (with the option for allocated funding.) There is an emphasis on work life balance, with flexible working hours, and there is security in your role.
