Computer Science

The Higher Diploma in Science (Computer Science) MHG58 is a postgraduate course intended for graduates whose level 8 primary degree included 3-year's study of Computing. On completion of the course participants would be expected to reach a level of competence equivalent to that of a four year BSc graduate in Computer Science.

Subjects taught

Students choose, subject to module prerequisites, 9 modules; modules chosen must not have been covered at this level in a previous qualification. In addition a project is required.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the course are required to hold a 3-year university degree (level 8), or its equivalent, recognized by the Senate of the University with computing as one of its subjects. (Examples include BA degrees with Computing and degrees where Computing is a minor subject). Graduates with less computing than required are recommended to also apply for the Higher Diploma in Software Development MHG70. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to an Irish university primary degree level (level 8).

Applicants who do not have a level 8 primary degree may also have the opportunity to apply through the Maynooth University (RPL) Recognition of Prior Learning route.

Fees

In general, there are two levels of fees payable. EU students from EU countries including Ireland pay a subsidised level of fees for both taught courses and research programmes. Tuition fees for students from outside the EU are not subsidised and are thus somewhat higher than for EU students.

The course brings graduates to a level equivalent to a 4-year degree in computer science and to apply for jobs intended for such graduates. Graduates will be eligible to apply for further postgraduate study including taught MSc in Computer Science and MSc/PhD by research.
