Course Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training provides opportunities for participants to develop professional understanding and knowledge through study, practice, and critical reflection on their experiences as a Further Education and Training (FET) teacher. It is designed to help participants develop innovative professional ideas and practice to support learners with diverse educational needs in a range of settings. It will allow participants to explore the theoretical factors underpinning policy and practice in the areas of diversity and inclusion and apply course knowledge and skills to their professional practice. It will enable participants to reflect critically on their professional role, practice, and context to evaluate and improve future teaching and learning.

Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training should be studied by anyone who works in the field of education and training, such as teachers, trainers, administrators, and other professionals.





Course Structure

The Framework Masters in Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training is made up of:



- Postgraduate Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion, which takes one year to complete part-time and comprises 30 ECTS. There are three modules in total each with face-to-face and online components;



- Diploma in Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training (year 2, comprising 30 ECTS). There are three modules in total each with face-to-face and online components;



- Masters in Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training (year 3, comprising 30 ECTS). Students undertake a research dissertation.



Programme Aims

- Evaluate key theory and knowledge in relation to students with diverse educational needs in a range of FET settings;



- Analyse the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and evaluate its potential to create a more inclusive environment for every student;



- Assess principles of inclusion and diversity to teaching, learning and assessment practice that meet the professional standards of FET practitioners;



- Engage in a professional dialogue with peers in the areas of diversity and inclusion that cultivates a continuous professional learning culture within the FET sector.

Course Content

This is a unique programme which aims to respond to a clearly identified need in the professional development of practitioners in the FET sector. Traditionally, the FET sector has been underserved in respect of sector specific offerings, and the proposed course in partnership with City of Dublin ETB aims to address a specific need with respect to supporting practices related to diversity and inclusion. As a consequence of the partnership with the City of Dublin ETB, the programme has been designed with personnel from both the City of Dublin ETB and the School of Education, Trinity. Furthermore, relevant personnel from the City of Dublin ETB contribute to the delivery of the programme.



Modules include: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion:; Inclusive Classroom Practices through a UDL lens; and Speaking to Diversity.

Admission Requirements

For the coming academic year, applications are restricted to applicants who have been approved for sponsorship by the City of Dublin Education and Training Board, Dublin Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board and other approved Education and Training Boards. English Language Requirements

All applicants to Trinity are required to provide official evidence of proficiency in the English language. Applicants to this course are required to meet Band B (Standard Entry) English language requirements.
