Educational Leadership & Management
Programme Overview
The flexible, part-time Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Management (M Ed ELM) extends Mary Immaculate College's strong commitment to the principle of professional development in the education system. The programme supports those interested in and/or involved with leadership and management in a multitude of educational contexts in gaining new skills and knowledge to excel.
Key Features
The M Ed ELM aims to develop participants' knowledge, skills, beliefs, values and professional practices in ways that support:
•The development of reflective professionals who can lead and manage with confidence, vision and courage
•The continuing development of reflective professionals who promote and maintain a strong commitment to ethical leadership
•The development of reflective professionals in the area of educational leadership and management who will respond confidently to change and diversity in Irish society in the twenty-first century
•The development of reflective professionals who can respond confidently to change in Irish educational policy in the twenty-first century
•The continuing development of professionals who are committed to caring, considered and effective management of an educational setting
•The development of professionals who value, contribute to and promote research in the area of educational leadership and management.
This programme is delivered over four semesters on a flexible part-time basis (comprising evenings and some weekends over two or three years).
Students who accrue 60 credits can exit the programme with a Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Management in Education.
Subjects taught
The core modules studied in this programmes are:
•Leadership and Management Portfolio
•Management and Administration in Education Contexts
•Education and the Law
•School Self Evaluation and Whole School Planning: Leading and Managing Curriculum Change
•Organisational Psychology applied to Educational Contexts
•Principles and Practice of Research in Education
Each student can also choose an elective.
Electives currently on offer are:
•Ceannasaíocht Ghairmiúil san Oideachas Lán-Ghaeilge/Professional Leadership in Irish-medium Education
•Developing a Digital School of Distinction
•The Christian Vision of the Human Person and its implications for Education
Participants will also complete a dissertation.
Entry requirements
•Applicants will normally hold a minimum 2.2 Honours Bachelor degree (major award at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications) or a major award at Level 9 or a major award at Level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications.
•Applicants will normally have a minimum of two years relevant work experience in an education setting and should be currently working in a relevant education setting.
•Other applicants who have substantial and relevant prior experience and/or learning will also be considered. Acceptance under this category will be subject to an interview and considered in light of the UL Policy on Accredited Prior Learning.

In the case of non-native English speakers, a copy of IETLS (or equivalent) is required.
