Engineering - Civil Engineering - Environment & Energy - Cork
The taught Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering programme is aimed at graduates of accredited Level 8 Civil Engineering programmes, who wish to develop their skills and expertise in the fields of Environmental and Energy Engineering and who wish to attain the educational standard required for Chartered Engineer status through an Engineers Ireland accredited programme. For applicants with a background in other disciplines, equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning process on an individual case-by-case basis to those who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience in the discipline of Civil, Environmental or Energy Engineering.
This programme aims to develop advanced analytical, design, assessment, appraisal and research skills in Civil Engineering in the specialist areas of environmental and energy engineering. Graduates of this programme will be well equipped to meet the challenges of the modern Civil Engineering based, environmental, and energy engineering industries, providing, protecting and enhancing the natural environment and the related physical infrastructure that underpins society; in this context, a broad range of environmental and energy engineering topics are addressed from the local level to the global scale.
The programme content seeks to reflect current and likely future practices and trends in environmental and energy engineering analysis, design, and assessment.It aims to provide the graduate with an advanced conceptual understanding, detailed factual knowledge, specialist technical skills, and an overall holistic awareness of the issues involved that are required for success in modern environmental and energy engineering practice.
The elective options afford the opportunity for the development of skills and competencies in a range of additional disciplines.
Subjects taught
The Department offers two taught MEng programmes specialising in the fields of
Structural and
Civil Engineering (Environment and Energy).
The programmes are fully accredited by Engineers Ireland as satisfying the new educational standard for the title Chartered Engineer.
The taught Master of Engineering programmes are designed to:
deepen the postgraduate student’s technical knowledge, skills and competences in the field of specialisation
develop an ability to carry out in depth research in a chosen field of Engineering, to draw conclusions from the research and present research findings
broaden knowledge in other areas such as Sustainability, Management, and Business
Additionally, the MEng in Structural Engineering programme will provide preparation for the Institute of Structural Engineers Professional Practice Examinations by developing structural analysis and design skills.
Entry requirements
Holders of existing Level 8 qualifications in Civil, Structural or Environmental Engineering are eligible to apply for advanced entry to Year 4 or Year 5 of the programme. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine the stage of entry (direct to Year 5, to Year 5 post-Bridging Studies, or direct to Year 4).
1. Students who attain a minimum of a H2.2 standard in year 3 of the BEng (Hons) in Structural Engineering programme are eligible to apply to transfer to year 4 of the MEng in Civil Engineering (Environment and Energy) programme.
Full-time: Current MTU Year 3 students

2. Advance Entry: Full-time studies
Holders of existing Level 8 qualifications in Civil, Structural or Environmental Engineering are eligible to apply for advanced entry to year 4 or year 5 of the programme.
Applications are assessed on a case by case basis to determine the stage of entry (direct to year 5, to Year 5 post Bridging Studies or direct to year 4).
Applicants will be required to pay an acceptance fee of €500 online if a place on a course is offered. This fee is deductible from the overall course fee.

Graduates have found employment with private sector firms such as JBA Consulting, GlaxoSmithKlein Ireland, RPS Group, MottMacDonald, Arup, O2 Environmental, JB Barry Consulting, DJF Consulting. Others have been employed by the Office of Public Works, Bord Gáis, and ESB International.
