Engineering - Electrical & Electronic Engineering - Research
The MEngSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering is a flexible research degree where students dive into deep technical challenges alongside their expert faculty supervisor. Students complete their degree over 1 to 2 years, submitting a comprehensive thesis documenting their original research findings between their 3rd and 6th trimester at UCD. This research degree programme develops the advanced skills and competencies that distinguish exceptional engineers in today's rapidly evolving technology landscape.
This is pure research: no lectures, no exams, just you and your technical project. Success depends entirely on the quality of your final thesis and its formal examination. Unlike a PhD, there's no pressure to revolutionize the field; instead, you just to need to demonstrate mastery of research methodology and technical problem-solving. The degree is an intensive, focused experience that transforms bright engineering graduates into confident researchers and innovators.
Each MEngSc student receives dedicated desk space within the Engineering Building and works with a named faculty supervisor on carefully matched research projects. Often, you will integrate into established research teams, accessing state-of-the-art laboratories, specialist equipment, and cutting-edge software tools that define modern engineering research. Support comes from multiple levels: your supervisor provides expert mentorship, a Research Studies Panel offers broader guidance, and the School's Graduate Research Governing Board ensures program excellence. Plus, you'll have full access to UCD's comprehensive university resources, from extensive research libraries to vibrant campus life.
Before you start your application it is advisable to email the academic overseeing this masters paul.cuffe@ucd.ie in advance to discuss your interest.
