The program offers a series of modules developed for new or experienced learners in evidence synthesis, evidence-based practice and advanced systematic reviews including the development and implementation of clinical guidelines. The certificate is aimed at professionals working in industries where evidence synthesis is frequently needed to inform decision-making. Examples of these industries include pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organizations (CROs), governments, healthcare settings, International Organizations, NGOs, and medical device companies. The flexible online learning modules align with the fourth objective of the Higher Education Authority – to enhance equality of opportunity to the diversity of abilities, learning modes, and lifestyles in modern Irish society.

Course Description



The Professional Certificate in Evidence Synthesis provides in-depth knowledge and specialised skills in evidence synthesis. It comprises three modules combining remote and face-to-face learning. The Introduction to Systematic Review (SR) and Meta-analysis module (PHPS40980) offers a range of synchronic and asynchronous lectures. Students will learn the rationale to conduct systematic reviews, the types and methods of evidence synthesis, the steps to complete an evidence synthesis project, in addition to using existing software pertaining to systematic reviews (excel, revman, covidence, R) Assessment strategy includes applying a systematic review to a real-world decision-making scenario. Students also complete a protocol for a SR. The second module, Advanced Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Clinical Guidelines (PHPS40990) comprises of a blended learning format to facilitate teaching software skills and communication skills.



Programme Structure



This Professional Certificate is a UCD level 4 qualification comprising of 3 modules, each worth 5 ECTS credits: PHPS40980 - Introduction to Systematic Review and Meta-analysis, PHPS40990 - Advance Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Clinical Guidelines Development. Students can also choose among the following optional modules based on their professional background and/or career plans: PHTY20270-Evidence Based Practice, PHPS40970- Randomised Clinical Trials or PHPS41160- Patient Reported Outcomes.

In addition, based on professional background and/or career plans, students can choose one of the following option modules:



PHTY20270-Evidence Based Practice

PHPS40970- Randomize Clinical Trials

PHPS41160- Patient Reported Outcomes

PHPS41150- Introduction to Biostatistics

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold:



A second-class honours degree at a 2.2 level or higher in any professional field including any health science discipline, social sciences, computer sciences, communication, and education.



Or, in exceptional circumstances:



In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant experiential or professional learning and can present to the course director a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating the meeting of graduate qualities (including subject-specific outcomes), this may be considered as an alternative entrance route. Evidence used to demonstrate graduate qualities may not be used for exemption against modules within the programme.



In addition, all applicants must have evidence of competence in written and spoken English (IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent, with no element below 6.0).
