History

As a Level 9 Postgraduate qualification in its own right, applications from those who wish to register for only the taught modules offered on the MA Irish History, MA Local History, MA European History or MA Military History & Strategic Studies, or indeed to take modules across programmes (to a maximum of 60 credits), are most welcome.

Subjects taught

Students choose from a mix of compulsory and optional modules on offer within the Department's MA programmes in European History, Irish History, and Military History & Strategic Studies. HY667 Skills and Methods in History [10 credits] is compulsory.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8) (or equivalent) with a minimum of a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) 55% in History. Bachelor's degrees (NFQ Level 8) (or equivalent) with a minimum of a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) 55% in cognate disciplines may also be considered.



Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. Career Options

Many graduates of this programme have gone on to pursue careers or further education in the arts and heritage sector, in galleries, libraries, museums, archives and cultural institutions. This qualification can also be of use in diplomatic service, politics, law, public relations and public administration including with EU bodies.



Some graduates subsequently embark upon PhD programmes in Maynooth University or another third-level institution and their experience of independent research sets them in good stead to engage in future postgraduate research and apply for funding on a competitive basis.
