Law - LLM Employment Law in Practice

Programme structure and approach to learning:

The innovative LLM Employment Law in Practice which is offered in association with the Law School at Leeds Beckett University is specifically designed for those who have completed our Diploma in Employment Law. Building upon the Diploma in Employment Law, the programme provides the ideal opportunity for professional development in a specialised area of employment law.

Uniquely, the LLM provides the opportunity of using the Diploma as a building block to achieve a further recognised academic qualification. The award of the LLM requires 180 credits, and the Diploma in Employment Law provides 120 credits and the research-based dissertation then provides the remaining 60 credits required.

The programme will commence with a course induction day onsite in the Law Society, following which you will complete a self-paced online dissertation module. This module is not assessed, but is designed to help you update your legal research and writing skills. For the remainder of the programme, you will complete a dissertation on an agreed area of employment law. You will be assigned a supervisor from a panel of employment law experts, comprising both internal Law Society staff and senior external practitioners/academics. The programme lasts for one year, a time-scale designed to allow you to complete the LLM in keeping with your work commitments.

- Apart from the personal satisfaction of gaining a Master’s, the programme provides career benefits through focus on skills that are directly relevant to the needs of a modern work setting, including

- The development of existing expertise and knowledge;

- The opportunity to gain expertise in a new area;

- Enhancement of skills in research and legal analysis; and

- Enhanced understanding of the wider context in which the law is developed and is implemented.
