Master of Science in Maritime Operations is structured over 18 months and comprises of three semesters. The first and second semesters each consist of three core modules and one elective, with students having the option to choose their elective from two available options. The final semester, occurring in the second year, is dedicated to the completion of a Maritime Operations Research Dissertation on an approved topic of research. Additionally, the program offers two distinct ten-credit modules that students may opt to take as stand-alone micro-credentials. The program is designed to be delivered online to prospective students.
The program is structured to furnish participants with the requisite knowledge and tools for sound decision-making and leadership in onshore management roles, as well as offering support for various maritime operations such as port management, ship management, offshore energy development, aquaculture, and other marine endeavor's associated with Ireland.
Emphasising alignment with ESF+ priorities, the program will adopt a blended delivery approach, predominantly online, supplemented by class tutorials and networking opportunities within maritime partner company settings. It will prioritize continuous professional development (CPD), integrating skill training in leadership, analytical thinking, decision-making, negotiation, and business acumen.

Entry requirements
Candidates with a previous Level 8 Major Award, in Nautical Science, Engineering or equivalent e.g. Degree in IT, Business, Marine Engineering, Finance, disciplines with work experience or exposure to ports, shipping, logistics management activities.
OR
Candidates with Level 7 Major Award combined with Master Unlimited or Chief Engineer Unlimited CoC can enter the program directly.
Candidates with combinations of other qualifications will be considered where experience is suitable via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) evaluation, which may include an interview.
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to.

The Masters and Post Graduate programmes in Maritime Operations will prepare a broad range of graduates for roles as senior port professionals, local and national, government officials and seafaring professional with leadership and managerial responsibilities in both industry and public sector roles, ashore and afloat. Maritime managers must have the skills, knowledge and competency to ensure the safe, effective delivery of maritime activities, whether ashore in a port or a drydock or onboard a sea going vessel.
The graduates will be abreast of the global shipping and supply chain landscape to ensure effective and compliant requirements for their organisations to ensure the movement of vessels and goods while realising efficiencies and meeting current and future shipping emission reduction requirements.
NMCI’s MSc in Maritime Operations Masters and Post Graduate programmes are developed with our industry partners to address all issues relating to the management of our maritime industry with a strong focus on digitalisation and future technologies; diversity and people management; and the maritime industry’s key role in addressing the global climate challenge.
The programme modules are designed to equip students with knowledge and tools to manage port, to critically appraise and advise on legal maritime matters affecting port and shipping operations, and to enable organisations to operate effectively and still meet climate change targets of net zero by 2050.
This programme provide students with discrete job readiness skills to qualify for more senior positions of responsibility in maritime management. A strong collaborative relationship has developed with industry cohorts representative of ports, shipping companies, transport companies, maritime and offshore renewables and service sectors. Industry partners have continuously demonstrated the demand needed to upskill their maritime personnel.
