Mediation - Micro-Credential
Mediation is increasingly being used within Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) organisations; as well as being used more in the resolution of court-based or private dispute resolution. Mediation knowledge and skills play a significant role in the resolution of disputes from: family (separation, parenting, international child abduction, older persons); commercial; workplace; community; and peace-building to name a few. We are now seeing more mainstream use of mediation across a range of areas in Irish society. The Mediation Act 2017 places specific requirements on mediators. This programme facilitates participants in developing the knowledge and skills that underpin the mediation of conflicts and disputes. In addition to understanding current concepts, policy and good practice relating to mediation, participants will develop the critical skills required to be an effective mediator. Successful completion of the course will provide participants with the opportunity to take a separate professional assessment of their skills. Successful completion of this assessment allows participants to apply to join the Mediators' Institute of Ireland (MII).
Through blended learning that employs online and live classes, practice sessions and peer feedback, this module will provide participants with a structured learning environment. Following completion of the module, these credits may be accepted as part of relevant School of Law and Criminology postgraduate programmes, such as postgraduate diplomas or masters.
Entry requirements
Applicants should have a minimum 2.2 grade, honours (level 8) degree.
This course is also open to experienced professionals who do not hold a primary or higher degree with entry via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Further information on RPL can be found on the RPL website.

Duration
3 months, part-time
This course will be delivered in person on-campus at Maynooth University from 9.30am-4.30pm on Saturdays. Online classes will take place from 6pm-8.30pm on Tuesday evenings.
Students wishing to take the optional competency assessment, to register with the MII as professional mediators eligible to practice, will attend an additional practice day and competency assessment day.

Mediation skills are a desirable skill in a range of professions, including for those working in human resources, trade unions and any role where conflict may need to be resolved. Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the opportunity to undertake a professional assessment of their skills. Successful completion of this assessment allows participants to apply to join the Mediators' Institute of Ireland (MII).
There is an increasing use of mediation in Ireland. The Mediators' Institute of Ireland has existed since 1992. This organisation accredits training programmes and offers a professional base to a range of organisations and individuals (current membership circa 750). Career paths for mediators now exist within a number of public bodies: Legal Aid Board (Family Mediation); Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman; Residential Tenancies Board; The Workplace Relations Commission; and Traveller Mediation Service. The demand for mediation services also complements the portfolio of work that can be offered by self-employed dispute resolvers.
