Physical Education

This master’s program is tailored to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of physical education.



This master’s program fosters ongoing growth and development as physical educators, emphasising the adoption of positive attitudes, values, and practices that contribute to continuous improvement as teachers in both the short and long term.

Upon successful completion of the programme, a graduation ceremony will be arranged by Portobello Institute.

Research Methods and Physical Education Pedagogy 10 Credits

Physical Education as a Learning Process 10 Credits

Teaching Efficacy and Teacher Development 10 Credits

History, Policy and International Development of Curriculum of PE 20 Credits

Physical Education Teacher Education and Development 10 Credits

Physical Literacy and Universal Models in Physical Education 10 Credits

Dissertation in Physical Education 30 Credits



PE Teaching Work Placement

Students who plan to apply for the Qualified Teacher Status must complete 120 days of placement across two secondary schools (the majority of placement days can be spent in one school). A typical school day is 3-4 hours per day. We provide support sourcing placements however students are responsible for sourcing placements suited to their location and availability.



As part of your MSc in Physical Education, you will gain important practical skills and experience through placement. While school settings are recommended, flexibility will be provided to students to also complete placements in other related contexts such as sports clubs and community settings.

Applicants will be required to have a minimum of a 2.2 (or equivalent) in a related subject discipline. You should also submit an up-to-date CV and copies of awards/professional qualifications.



For non-standard entry, applicants would need to be able to demonstrate a comparable academic standard through past studies and relevant work experience.



All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
