Smart Factories - Online
This module will introduce the students to the state of the art and emerging research in manufacturing engineering with a focus on the use of modern industrial digital technologies which underpin and enable digital manufacturing.

Course Topics:
Technologies road map:
The explanation of the development hierarchy of the manufacturing systems and the various advancements that took place leading to smart factories. Understanding of the key changes that transformed the manufacturing industry.
Enabling technologies:
The introduction of modern technologies that supports the digitalisation and the design of manufacturing systems which includes digital-twins, discrete events simulations, smart sensors networks, Artificial Intelligence (AI), The Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, machine learning and virtual reality, their benefits, barriers, and implementation process will be examined.
Human and environmental factors:
The study of the modern technologies impact on the human aspect and the required sets of skills for technology adaption. The module will look at the human-centric approach in industry and places human needs and interests at the heart of the production process. Recent emerging industry builds upon current practices and promotion of advanced digitisation with a view to society and environmental issues.
Entry requirements
Bachelor’s degree with minimum Second Class (2:2) or equivalent in any subject. You may need to provide evidence of your English language ability.
Qualification Gained
Micro-Credential in Smart Factories FHEQ Level 7 – Comparable to NFQ Level 9.
Duration
12 weeks part-time online delivery.

We have considerable expertise in flexible study and our online interactive learning management system is designed to enable you to study at your own pace.
All materials such as course notes, supplementary reading documentation, online videos, and assignment briefs are contained in folders within each module. You will also have access to our online student community, webinars, and discussion forums to foster communication with our other students to discuss and resolve issues related to your studies.
Online delivery is supported by an induction day at the beginning of the programme and up to 5 interactive Saturday sessions.
