Programme Overview

The aim of this module is to enhance knowledge and understanding of the essentials of therapeutic communication. The module will further enhance therapeutic skills and help the student to develop the therapeutic relationship which serves to underpin the basis of all psychological therapies. Critical exploration of attitudes, feelings and behaviour will take place. This module will help students to identify, explore and manage issues that may arise in the therapeutic alliance e.g. therapeutic ruptures.



Programme Outline

This module consists of lectures, discussions, recorded role play exercises and subsequent discussion, and seminar presentations. Examples from clinical and personal experience will be used to focus the sessions.



Who’s Suited to This Programme

The School of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies delivers a number of stand alone modules which address issues of interest to all health and social care professionals. Each module runs over one semester. Credits attained can be accumulated over a 2-3-year timeframe and put towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing/ Professional Studies). The modules are delivered in a flexible manner to accommodate the learning requirements of busy healthcare professionals. Alternatively, those who opt not to be assessed in the module receive a certificate of attendance.

Entry requirements

Level 8 Undergraduate degree or equivalent.
