Climate Change Program — Art in Tanzania

Tanzania is on the frontline of the climate crisis. Come help write the next chapter.

Droughts are intensifying. Harvests are failing. Kilimanjaro's glaciers are retreating. For the 75% of Tanzanians who live in rural areas and depend on agricultural income, climate change isn't a future threat — it's today's reality. The most vulnerable communities — women, youth, and people with disabilities — are bearing the heaviest burden.

Art in Tanzania, in collaboration with a consortium of NGOs and private-sector partners, is turning research into action. Here is your opportunity to contribute.

About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has connected approximately 250 participants per year with meaningful, hands-on community work across Tanzania. Our Climate Change Program takes a multi-disciplinary approach — bringing together students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds to assess the current situation, model future scenarios, and co-develop real solutions with local communities.

This is not desk research. This program is field-based, community-embedded climate action.

What You'll Do

Your placement is tailored to your background and interests. Work spans six core areas:

🌳 Tree Planting & Reforestation Join restoration efforts on the degraded slopes of Kilimanjaro and other vulnerable landscapes, working directly with nursery management and community planting initiatives.

📢 Community Awareness & Education Run workshops in local schools and villages on climate change, deforestation, and sustainable land use practices — translating complex issues into accessible, actionable knowledge.

📡 Media & Policy Advocacy Produce and distribute radio programmes, TV content, and short films to spotlight local climate challenges and drive conversations around fossil fuel transition. Our Facebook page reaches over 50,000 followers — your content will have an audience.

☀️ Alternative & Renewable Energy Teach energy-efficient cooking techniques and help build simple solar cookers. Support household-level solar installations that reduce dependence on wood fuel and lower community-level emissions.

📊 Data Collection & Climate Research: Gather and analyse data on climate impacts — across water resource management, agriculture, and ecosystem health — to feed into policy development and institutional reporting.

📝 Reporting & Documentation Produce progress reports, case studies, and monitoring documents that capture the impact of ongoing climate projects and support organisational learning and advocacy.
