Role Overview  

The UCC Library
internship programme has been created to ensure the active engagement of
students in the further development of library services. The programme offers
UCC students an exciting opportunity to gain paid work experience in an
academic library environment. 

Under the general
direction of an experienced professional supervisor, the Intern will acquire
hands-on experience in a particular discipline within the library
environment.  They will work with staff from across the Library team,
engage with library clients and work collaboratively on an assigned
project.   

 

Project
details 

This internship will support the
auditing, appraisal, and preservation planning of optical media and audio‑visual
content held in Special Collections and Archives at UCC Library. Working with
the Digital Systems Team, the intern will survey CDs, DVDs, and audio‑visual
materials to assess content, formats, and future digitisation needs. Optical
media will be migrated to the Library’s digital preservation systems, while
audio‑visual materials will be audited, appraised, and catalogued to inform
long‑term preservation and resource planning.

carriers in Special Collections and Archives collections labelled and
registered with location control.

Digital material from optical media
carriers transferred onto digital workstation and registered with technical
and creation metadata recorded.

Inventory of all physical audio-visual
material held in Special Collections and Archives.

·        
Audit of digital audio-visual
material.

·        
Creation of descriptive metadata
records for digital audio-visual material.

Documentation of execution of
procedures and processes

Technical and
Professional Knowledge/Skills which will be enhanced on Internship

Experience
working in a project-based environment.

Practical
application of digital preservation processes and practices using command
line interface.

·        
Practical
application and understanding of digital preservation OAIS (Open Archival
Information System) Model.

·        
Practical
understanding in application of descriptive, creation, preservation, and
technical metadata for digital objects.

·        
Learn
purpose and practical use of a number of FLOSS (Free Libre Open-Source
Software) tools used in digital preservation and access.

·        
Apply
F.A.I.R. principles for data in practice (Findable, Accessible,
Interoperable, Reusable).

·        
Learn
about different formats for digital audio-visual content.

·        
Learn
about core digital preservation concepts and activities such as integrity
control, identity management, content and bit preservation, normalisation,
migration, interoperability, metadata creation and information packaging.

Essential Criteria 

Current enrolled
student at UCC 

Numerical accuracy
and detail focused with good data-management skills.

Problem-solving
abilities and solutions focused.

IT skillset:

Understanding of
different forms of text applications and spreadsheet formats such as .csv,
.pdf, .xls, .doc

Experience with OSX
operating systems.

Experience using
command line applications

Desirable Criteria

Knowledge of git,
bash and python

Understanding and
experience with digital image formats e.g. JPEG and TIFF

Understanding and
experience with digital AV formats e.g QuickTime, WAV
