Graphic Designer
To lead the visual design of UCC Student Media in collaboration with the Student Media Manager and the teams working across its three outlets. This will involve working closely with the editors, Social Media and Content team, Web Design Lead and student contributors.
The role will focus primarily on the design and print production of six issues of Motley during the year, alongside two print issues of University Express.
During the opening weeks, the Graphic Designer will work particularly closely with the Web Design Lead and Social Media and Content Lead to create banners, templates and graphics for Student Media’s websites and social platforms. Clear, consistent and reliable communication across the team is essential.
Key Responsibilities
● Design and prepare six print issues of Motley in close collaboration with the Editor
● Design and prepare two print issues of University Express in collaboration with its editorial team
● Develop strong editorial layouts for written work, photography, illustration and other visual material
● Prepare completed publications to the technical standards required for professional printing
● Work with the Student Media Manager and outlet teams to develop a coherent visual approach across Student Media
● Work closely with the Web Design Lead and Social Media and Content Lead during the opening weeks
● Create website banners, social media graphics and reusable digital templates for Student Media’s online platforms
● Establish and maintain a distinctive and consistent visual identity for each publication across print, web and social media
● Create graphics for launches, events, campaigns and student recruitment where required
● Communicate regularly with editors and the wider team about deadlines, revisions and outstanding material
● Manage feedback and complete revisions within agreed production schedules
● Attend a scheduled weekly meeting with the Student Media Manager to review progress, priorities and upcoming deadlines
Desired Competencies
This role requires demonstrable graphic design and publication-layout experience. Applicants do not need to be studying design, but they must have the technical ability to design a multi-page publication and prepare it for professional printing.
● Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign
● Strong working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator
● Experience with Adobe Photoshop is desirable
● A strong understanding of editorial layout, typography, colour and visual hierarchy
● Experience preparing files for professional print production
● Creativity, originality and close attention to detail
● Excellent communication and collaborative working skills
● An ability to manage deadlines, feedback and multiple rounds of revisions
● An ability to manage a substantial annual publication schedule
● An interest in independent publishing, media, art and culture in Cork and beyond
