Student Intern Digital Automation / Operational Excellence

We are seeking a Student Intern for our Digital Automation / Operational Excellence activities located in Ballina, Co. Mayo for a six-month contract.

Reporting to the Site Automation / AI Lead, this role will support key digital improvement, data analytics, and automation activities across the site. The role will assist with the coordination, documentation, testing, and rollout of practical automation solutions that improve visibility, reduce manual effort, and support more efficient ways of working.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in the mapping and review of current manual processes across site departments, identifying opportunities for simplification, automation, or improved data visibility.
  • Support the development, testing, and documentation of Power Platform solutions, including Power Apps, Power Automate flows, and Power BI dashboards.
  • Assist with the maintenance and improvement of Smartsheet-based trackers, operational dashboards, and structured data sources.
  • Support ongoing automation projects such as scheduling visibility, QR code stock verification, workflow tracking, and site improvement initiatives.
  • Help prepare user guides, process documentation, test evidence, training material, and communication packs for new digital tools.
  • Assist in collecting user feedback, tracking issues, and documenting improvement actions following pilot deployments.
  • Support the measurement of benefits from automation projects, including time saved, reduction in manual activity, improved process visibility, and reduction of duplication.
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of Just Do It / JDI improvement clinics, helping teams define one clear problem, capture requirements, and document potential next steps.
  • Work with site stakeholders to support adoption of simple digital tools while ensuring appropriate governance, data ownership, and documentation are maintained.

Minimum requirements

  • Currently undertaking a degree in Business Information Systems, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Engineering, Science, Business, Digital Transformation, or a related discipline.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with data, spreadsheets, and digital tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Interest in process improvement, automation, data analytics, or digital transformation.

Desirable but not essential

  • Experience or interest in Python, JSON, Microsoft 365 tools, including Excel, SharePoint, Teams, Power Apps, Power Automate, or Power BI.
  • Familiarity with Smartsheet, dashboards, workflow tools, or basic data visualisation.
  • Basic understanding of process mapping, Lean, continuous improvement, or operational excellence.
  • Interest in AI tools, digital productivity, and practical automation in a regulated operational environment.


Governance and scope boundary

The role will support digital improvement activities under supervision. The student will not be responsible for independent deployment of validated systems, production-critical tools, or GMP-impacting changes. All outputs will be reviewed and approved by the relevant process owner and site governance structure.
