Summer academic assistant for International students

We are a team of experts in the area of Educational Technology with many years of experience in designing and delivering programmes for young people which make best use of teaching and learning through technology. We are actively involved in developing and promoting the effective use of technology in the classroom both in Ireland and throughout Europe. Our approach of Project-Based, Technology Enhanced Learning means that students work together to complete projects through English, using technology where it can help them in reaching their objective.


The Academic Assistant supports students and teachers in delivering project-based, technology-enhanced classes. Responsibilities include helping students with learning and technology, monitoring welfare and behavior, setting up classrooms and equipment, checking attendance, assisting with workshops and admin tasks, and supporting the Director of Studies. This person should be excellent at working with young learners, including problem solving skills and a positive attitude. In addition to being highly organised and showing up to work well prepared.


Location: Galway University

Contract: Fixed-term contract 4 weeks from June 29th to July 24th

Training: 25th+26th June

Learners’ Age & Levels: Ages 12–17, levels A2–B2 (Pre-Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate).

Schedule: 40 hours per week - Monday to Friday - 8:30 to 17:00 (including 30-minute lunch break)

Rate: €611.2 per week (including holiday pay)

Reports to: Summer Director of studies / Assistant Director of studies


Key responsibilities (non-exhaustive):



Assist the students:


  • To assist using our Project-Based and Technology Enhanced approach to delivering communicative, student-driven classes and to make a connection with out-of-class activities.

  • To provide a level of culturally sensitive support for the students' learning and to refer any welfare issues that come to their attention in class to the relevant person.

  • During the sessions, assist ensuring the appropriate use of equipment, software, and internet resources provided by the school.

  • To be sufficiently familiar with the tools the students are using to be able to help them and to troubleshoot any difficulties they have.

  • Where a student needs to leave the class or activity for any reason, or sit with them or accompany them to the office.

  • Monitor students during breaks and lunch


Assist the academic team:


  • To assist the Director of studies/ADOS in ensuring the orderly running of the classes in adhering to timetable and classroom discipline guidelines.

  • To assist ensuring that the educational space assigned is set up in an appropriate way for the group and that all of the equipment they need is in place and functioning normally and after their session to return everything to the appropriate place as indicated by the DOS.

  • Check and troubleshoot equipment and other subscription services that teachers and students use

  • Assist the academic team by setting up the classrooms before the start of lessons : check and organize classroom material / equipment (laptops/whiteboards and markers etc).

  • Assist the teachers and students with technology related questions during classes

  • Assist the teachers with checking students attendance

  • Assist the DOS in preparing the afternoon workshops and the next day (material / equipment / laptops)

  • Assist in academic administration tasks

  • To act as a cover teacher if necessary

  • To maintain regular, consistent, and professional attendance, punctuality, personal appearance, and adherence to relevant health & safety procedures.

A typical day includes:

  • Making sure classrooms are open, laptops are working, and all materials are ready before classes start

  • Joining the team briefing at the beginning of the day

  • Checking attendance with teachers and helping late students find their classroom

  • Navigate between classes to check if teachers need help and to make sure everything is going well

  • Supporting the DOS and Center Manager with tasks like paperwork, planning, or organizing things

  • Watching students during break and lunch to make sure they are safe and behaving well

  • Make sure everything is ready for the next day

Requirements

  • Qualifications: Currently studying to become a teacher (partially qualified teacher)

  • Experience: Experience working with children or students in an educational setting (classroom, summer program, or extracurricular activities).

  • Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity; Confident user of technology for teaching purposes.

  • Location: Must reliably commute to or plan to be based near location before the start date.

  • Eligibility: Must be eligible to work in Ireland (EU citizenship or valid work/residency permit).
