Village Education Program — Art in Tanzania

A classroom of 40 children. Scarce resources. A teacher who needs support. The task where you can make a difference.

In Tanzania's village schools, the gap between what children need and what schools can provide is wide — and closing it requires people who show up, roll up their sleeves, and teach. Not observe. Not assist from a distance. Teach.

Art in Tanzania's Education Program places you directly in that gap — in nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools, and adult vocational training centres serving some of Tanzania's most underserved communities. The work is immediate, visible, and genuinely needed.

About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our Education Program is part of the Children's Agenda — a structured approach to child development implemented by a coalition that includes UNICEF and Save the Children.

We work in village nurseries and primary and secondary schools, as well as adult vocational training programmes for women. Participants are placed specifically in the areas where schools are weakest, making your contribution targeted and high-impact from day one.

What You'll Teach & Do

📚 Core Subject Teaching Support classroom learning in the subjects where village schools need the most help:

  • English — including debate-based English training, one of the most popular and effective methods we use
  • Mathematics — building foundational numeracy skills in under-resourced classrooms
  • Arts & Music — creative education that is often among the first casualties of limited school budgets
  • Sports & Physical Education — developing teamwork, confidence, and physical wellbeing

♿ Inclusive Education: Teach and support children living with disabilities — a group that is often excluded from mainstream classroom participation and for whom dedicated attention makes a transformative difference.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Training Work alongside Tanzanian teachers to share approaches, model techniques, and contribute to professional development — building local capacity that outlasts your placement.

🏥 Health & Advocacy Conduct awareness sessions on HIV/AIDS, health, and hygiene in schools and communities — topics where education directly saves lives, and where an informed, engaged intern can have a real and lasting impact.

👩 Adult Vocational Training Support vocational education for women in our adult training centres — developing practical skills in English, IT, entrepreneurship, and other subjects that build economic independence and community resilience.

📱 Visibility & Social Media Document classroom activities, teacher training, and programme milestones for Art in Tanzania's social media channels — reaching an audience of over 50,000 Facebook followers and helping advocate for education access across Tanzania.

The Reality of the Classroom

Classroom tools are scarce. Class sizes can exceed 40 pupils. Resources that teachers in Finland or Germany take for granted do not exist here. That constraint is not a warning — it is the point. Learning to teach effectively with limited resources in a cross-cultural environment under real conditions is one of the most valuable professional experiences you can have. And the children in front of you will remind you every day why it matters.
