The Masters of Education programme is designed to develop students’ professional autonomy as both learners and practitioners with a strong focus on inquiry learning and the integration of theory, practice and research. Core taught modules will introduce the student to the, contemporary issues in education, postgraduate academic community and support the student in conducting high quality, ethical research. All students will share four core modules and develop a specialism through a thesis and two associated elective strand modules. An original research thesis must be completed as part of the programme.

The four taught core modules (4 x 9cr) are “Contemporary Issues 1: Perspectives on Learning, Teaching and Assessment,” “Academic Writing and Inquiry,” “Contemporary Issues 2: Perspectives on Educational Policy and Practice” and “Advanced Research Methods 1: Research Design.” The two specialist/elective route modules (2 x 12 cr) and a core thesis (30 cr) are drawn for the School of Education’s fours research priority areas; (i)Teaching and Teacher Education, (ii)Equality, Inclusion and Wellbeing, (iii) STEM Education, (iv) Educational Leadership and Policy, and (v) ‘Open’ route = any two elective modules.
Exemptions for non-core taught modules may be awarded on review of application.
An appropriate degree or equivalent recognised by the University of Limerick (NQAI - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland). An honours primary bachelor’s degree or equivalent (2.1 or 2.2 honours) in a relevant or appropriate subject. Relevant educational experience in primary, post-primary, adult, further, higher education or other relevant professional educational experiences [minimum = 1 year] is required. The University reserves the right to shortlist and interview applicants as deemed necessary.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):
Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:
Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
TOEFL – 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any one component.
English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
Cambridge Assessment English –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade B
