Role Overview
BnM has a large landbank and a diverse portfolio of projects in its development pipeline, including onshore wind, solar, energy storage, thermal generation and emerging technologies designed to address the evolving needs of the energy system.
As an Ecologist Graduate, you will support the team in providing ecology and biodiversity support and services to BnM renewable energy projects and BnM peatland rehabilitation. Success in this role will be measured by the development of your skills and knowledge as an ecologist, the support you give to projects and targets, and the support you give within the team, contributing to the overall success of the department and the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute general ecological support to renewable energy projects, including baseline ecological surveys of cutaway bogs, updating site-specific rehabilitation plans and supporting delivery of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Appropriate Assessment / Natura Impact Statement. This includes liaising with third-party consultants, cutover and raised bog habitat mapping, reviewing reports, attending meetings, data management, and maintaining internal databases and project documentation.
- Support the development of site-specific EPA rehabilitation plans and NPWS packages as part of the Peatland Climate Action Scheme (PCAS) and other rehabilitation or biodiversity projects, including stakeholder consultation, liaison with NPWS staff, monitoring and verification, habitat and bird surveys, other ecological surveys, GIS mapping, AA screening and NIS support, and statutory and legal reporting obligations.
- Support other BnM peatland rehabilitation projects and assist in delivering the company’s Biodiversity Action Plan, engaging with internal stakeholders to raise awareness of it.
- Support the delivery of renewable energy projects with ecological expertise to assist the Planning Team and inform business unit strategy, keeping abreast of changes in ecology, planning and environmental legislation, policy and development plans.
- Assist Project Managers and the Stakeholder and Advocacy team with materials for consultation with local communities and other stakeholders.
- Work as part of the BnM Ecology Team, contributing to team meetings, weekly updates, status reports, time management reporting and the recording of key performance indicators.
- All employees are expected to co-operate fully with the company’s provisions for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises, and to participate proactively in the Performance Management process.
What We’re Looking For
- Third-level qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or equivalent; a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline is desirable but not essential
- Graduate or internship experience preferable
- Knowledge of ecological surveying, report writing, peatland habitats, EIAR and AA desirable
- Proficiency in MS Office, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Good knowledge of digital data capture using GPS tablets and the processing and manipulation of survey data
- Good knowledge of online sharing platforms such as SharePoint and ShareFile is a distinct advantage
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently, both individually and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Good knowledge of habitat and species identification; specific species surveys and GIS proficiency desirable but not essential
- A full clean driving licence is required
