About Us

Dublin Port Company is a State-owned commercial entity responsible for the operation and development of Dublin Port, Ireland's busiest port, handling almost 50% of national trade. Located at the heart of Dublin City, the port is a vital piece of national infrastructure and is supported by significant long-term investment.

The Port Heritage and Special Projects function supports Dublin Port Company's commitment to preserving and sharing the port's rich history. Central to this work is the Dublin Port Archive, which holds over 300 years of records, photographs, drawings, and artefacts and provides public access to this important cultural and historical resource in line with statutory obligations.

The Role

Dublin Port Company is seeking an intern to join the team as part of the 2026 internship programme. This is a 10-week paid internship, commencing in mid-June 2026, offering hands-on experience in archival preservation, collections management, research, and public engagement.

Working under expert guidance, the intern will support the cataloguing, documentation, and care of Dublin Port's heritage collections, with a strong focus on the photographic archive. The role also includes contributing to research and digital content, assisting with heritage interpretation projects, and supporting exhibitions and cultural activities delivered as part of the summer programme. This position provides practical exposure to archive and heritage operations within a nationally significant organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the cataloguing, organisation, and preservation of the photographic collection and other archival materials.
  • Support the transfer and documentation of archive materials from operational facilities to the Dublin Port Archive.
  • Maintain accurate records and inventories using Excel and other documentation tools.
  • Ensure appropriate handling, packaging, and rehousing of heritage materials in line with best practice, including participation in a lantern slide preservation project.
  • Conduct research to support blog content and interpretive material for the Dublin Port Archive website.
  • Assist with indexing historic registers and documents to support the development of a searchable digital archive.
  • Support research and interpretation of heritage artefacts at the Flour Mill premises.
  • Assist with the delivery of exhibitions, cultural projects, and public engagement activities.
  • Provide general support to the Port Heritage and Special Projects team as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant undergraduate programme (e.g., history, heritage studies, archives, museum studies, library science, cultural studies, archaeology, art history, or anthropology).
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • An interest in archives, heritage, or collections management.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit a CV and a short cover letter (maximum 500 words). Given that this role is intended for undergraduate students, the cover letter will be used to assess motivation, interest in heritage and archives, and relevant transferable skills, rather than relying on prior experience alone.

Our Commitment to Diversity

Dublin Port Company values diversity and is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. Applications are welcomed from candidates of all backgrounds.
