Aughinish Alumina, situated on a 1,300-acre site on the Shannon Estuary, is one of the leading industrial plants in Ireland. It is the largest Alumina Refinery in Europe, producing approximately 2 million tonnes per annum of product that is the primary raw material for the production of aluminium. Working as part of a multidiscipline engineering group , this position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work on a wide range of heavy industrial plant and equipment through our capital and maintenance project programmes. These include tanks, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, piping, filters and heat exchangers etc., supported by the most advanced computer technology available to the Process Industry.

The successful candidate will join mechanical and electrical project engineers working together with stake-holders and will play a key role from day one in helping us deliver our maintenance projects and to achieve our ambitious capital investment programme. The candidate will:

  • Have previous experience of working in a team environment and will be used to setting individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.
  • Have an interest in heavy industry manufacturing.
  • Carry out visual inspections of our key mechanical assets and through training, develop condition reports and recommendations pertaining to their integrity.
  • Work with draughters to complete mechanical tender and construction drawings.
  • Assist with and completing engineering calculations.
  • Assist with engineering problems and developing solutions.
  • Assist with compiling cost estimates for various capital and expense projects.
  • Develop mechanical scopes of work, including design details utilising relevant and applicable Codes of Practice together with Aughinish specifications.
  • Liaise with our contractors, and our PSCS’s, before, during and after construction, to ensure full understanding of the scope, accurate and to successfully implement the projects in the plant.

What we look for:

  • Degree qualified, ideally with at least a 2:2 BEng in mechanical or chemical engineering discipline along with related work or project experience
  • Good appreciation for mechanical design
  • Ability to design from first principles, develop design concepts, understand piping and instrument drawings (P&ID), capable of good sketches for design development
  • Natural problem solver with strong engineering aptitude - excellent communication / interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic and energetic with the ability to integrate quickly into a team environment and genuinely committed to developing a career with us
