Job Title: Magazine Editor
Department: Student Media
Reports to: Ray Burke (Student Media Manager)

Role Purpose:
To democratically lead the editorial vision and production of Motley, the college student magazine, and to ensure that six print editions are planned, produced, and published over the academic year. The Editor will also play a key role in shaping the magazine’s digital presence and future direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, with the Student Media Manager, an expansive and dedicated volunteer team for all relevant roles at the magazine
  • Lead editorial planning, including feature ideas, and contributor assignments
  • Delegate editing to sub editors
  • Commission and edit articles, ensuring high editorial standards and creative flair
  • Collaborate closely with the Graphic Designer on layout and visual identity
  • Liaise with the social media and web teams to promote print and digital content
  • Chair regular editorial meetings and support a team of volunteer writers and editors
  • Work with the Student Media Manager to attract advertising, sponsorship, and wider readership
  • Contribute to the upcoming brand refresh and audience research for Motley and student media more broadly

Desired Competencies: 

We are looking for someone with a clear editorial voice, strong ideas, and a collaborative approach. You don’t need to have edited a magazine before, but you should clearly understand the role of an editor, be able to inspire others, spot a good story, and understand what will resonate with students. We need someone with creative and innovative ideas to maximise engagement and readership.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of defamation and other relevant policies and procedures
  • A keen editorial eye and creative judgement
  • Organisational and time-management abilities
  • Confidence in leading a volunteer editorial team
  • A strong interest in student culture, politics, lifestyle, and the arts
  • Familiarity with (or interest in learning) basic design and publishing tools
  • A commitment to inclusion and student representation
