Degree BA Accounting & Finance (DCU)
Job title Fund Accounting Supervisor
Employer Hedgeserv

My career

I studied Accounting & Finance in DCU, specialising in finance in my final year. Having completed my undergraduate degree, I took some time out and travelled for a few months. I wasn’t fully sure what I wanted to do, although I knew I wanted to work in the finance industry. I was exploring my options and heard about HedgeServ through a college careers mail and sent in my application.
I am really enjoying working in Hedgeserv, and the funds industry is such a diverse and interesting area. There are a wide range of projects that come across my desk, that consistently help develop my skills. There are great opportunities here for promotion and learning new skills to help you reach your full potential. The highlight of my time here so far was gaining promotion after two years working. I participated in the in house training program provided by HedgeServ, which is very helpful in learning about all hedge funds and the different products you will be dealing with every day. I
am currently studying towards my ACCA qualification for which HedgeServ also offers full tuition support.

Skills

My course gave me fundamental accounting knowledge, improved communication skills, and I developed great team working skills. Here I have developed key skills such as leadership, organisational and improved computer skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft excel &
access.

Tips and advice

The most important thing, I think, is to get your foot in the door, gain experience, and prove you are capable of performing. Look for a company that offers opportunities to grow and develop your skills. I hope to have my ACCA qualification within the next two years. I’d like to keep progressing through the ranks with my current role for the foreseeable future and remain in the funds industry.
