Emily Grimes, Strategic Brand Planning Executive, An Post

What does a typical day look like for you?

My job involves managing day-to-day marketing campaigns. I liaise with internal and external agencies to make sure that our campaigns are on track. I also work with social media managers to make sure we have all the assets and copy ready for the week for our social media channels.

What are the main skills needed to be successful in your role?

Communication skills are very important in this role. I work with a lot of people, and I need to keep key stakeholders up to date. Organisation is also important. There are lots of different projects that I’m involved in and lots of different things happening at one time. It’s important to stay on top of everything to make sure that you meet your deadlines and that everything goes live on time.

What was your career break and how did you find out about the programme?

I studied business and economics at Trinity College and I have always been interested in marketing. I came across the role for An Post online. It was going through a major transformation, moving from traditional letters to parcels and then on to services. I thought it was a very interesting time to join the company.

I wrote my application online, then I went in for an assessment centre and an interview and I got the job.

What advice would you give to a student?

Get as much experience as you can while you’re in college. Get involved in societies or try helping any small businesses that might need a hand in marketing.

I would also advise students to stay up to date with trends especially in digital marketing as they are constantly changing.

What do you like about your job?

I get to work with a lot of people both at An Post and through working with external agencies. My work involves liaising with co-workers in different departments.

My team is quite new so there are lots of projects that have never been done before. This means you’re creating something brand new! It’s a challenging but exciting role.

How have you adjusted to working from home?

It has been a smooth transition. We've set up lots of regular calls with the team and the graduate team have monthly check in meetings. This means you’re constantly checking in with everybody.
