My career background

A career in insurance was not originally in my plans. I come from a diverse educational background – my original degree was in HR & Industrial Relations from NCI, then I went on to complete Diplomas in Legal Studies and E-Marketing, PR and Advertising. After some research, I came to realise that insurance was the ideal career path for me. I love working with people and insurance is all about protecting individuals, communities and businesses when they are at their most vulnerable.

My current role

As a Motor Claims Handler, I'm on the frontline dealing with people on a daily basis; this is my favourite part of the job. There is never a dull moment. Joining Allianz gave me the opportunity to become a member of The Insurance Institute of Ireland (III), the leading provider of education, training and Continuing Professional Development for the industry. Last year, I earned the III's Professional Certificate in Insurance (APA), and this year I completed the industry benchmark, the Professional Diploma in Insurance (CIP). I've now decided to go beyond what my role requires by studying towards the Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII).

Tips for students

There is a diverse range of roles available in insurance, from customer service and sales to risk assessment and actuary, so those who are considering a career in insurance should really think about what area interests them and assess their skills to find out which area suits them best. I would also advise anyone entering insurance to begin studying straight away for the III exams – preparation is key. The III has great online and face to face study supports, so utilise them as much as possible.
