What does your role involve?
I’m involved in graduate recruitment for the company, so I manage this from the application for the position through to managing someone joining the company and getting started here on their career.
What was your path to your career?
I did a commerce degree in UCD, which was very focused on team skills and presentations and I think that really helped me get a human perspective on my career. I think that helps me gauge a candidate’s skills from their perspective, so my college background is definitely of help in my day to day career.
What skills are important?
Multitasking and organisational skills are very important in HR, and knowing where each candidate is in the recruitment process. Good communication skills are also vital, understanding the sensitivities around confidentiality and being comfortable dealing with people at all levels.
What’s the best thing about your job?
My favourite part is working on an induction with a new graduate recruit and I remember their original application, so it gives me great satisfaction to see it through to a successful conclusion. I also like working with our graduates and our training department in terms of developing their skills.
What advice would you have for students?
Explore as many options as you can, look at the diversity that companies can offer. If you’re happy with the direction you’re going in, great. If you’re not, stop and think about the other options around you.
