What does your job involve?

What does your job involve?

My job is to ensure that the accounts and reporting is accurate for a hedge fund. We provide back office support such as trading, balance sheets, profit and loss reports and ensure that the money leaving a fund is the same as what is recorded by our accounts.

What skills are important to be successful?

The two main skills you would need to be successful as a fund accountant are a keen eye for detail and time management. A lot of the time you are looking at reports that all look pretty much the same, but you need to know what you're looking at and you need to be able to get through a certain number of tasks a day and meet deadlines.

What do you love about your job?

I love the dynamic nature of hedge funds in general. The funds we see hold positions in companies that we see every day and it's cool to see how the news and articles you read affect the performance of the funds.

What was your 'career break'?

I knew I always wanted to work in financial services and a friend's Mum actually recommended that I read up on Hedgeserv. So I did, and I went to my placement officer in college and she gave my CV in to Hedgeserv, who called me in for an interview.

What advice would you give a first year student?

Pay attention to your assignments. You never know what you'll end up doing after college. Get involved with your careers department in college and go to gradIreland fairs, go to careers fairs, talk to companies and see what's out there.
