Work experience

You can complement your degree with work experience through a year out in industry or a summer placement.

Teamwork and leadership skills are valued by property employers. Develop those skills by joining clubs and societies and taking part in sporting activities at your university.

What sectors?

Real estate graduates can find employment with utilities services, in private practice, for heritage and commercial organisations, the public sector and government, working on commercial and industrial projects.

Employers include:

• medium-sized companies and consultancies;
• global property firms;
• housing associations;
• small rural firms.

You may opt for self-employment in such areas as land management, the environmental industry and agricultural property.

Your real estate CV

A real estate degree will develop your knowledge of all aspects of property, from planning to construction. It will usually blend lectures with site visits and practical projects.

Transferable skills include:

• data analysis;
• communication;
• leadership;
• presentation;
• time management;
• IT skills.

Postgraduate study

You may opt to specialise in one area of real estate by taking a postgraduate course in an area like property investment, property develop, real estate management, surveying, environmental conversation, and town and country planning.

Alternative options include postgraduate studies in banking or finance in order to develop your knowledge of a different career area. Further vocational training in areas like law or landscape architecture is possible.
