Joanne Bracken, Digital Marketing Executive, Three

What does your job involve?

I work on the 3Plus Loyalty Programme, looking after the offers and competitions on our Content Management System (CMS) and make sure that they are all functioning properly. I'm also in charge of reporting on customer engagement and how these customers are engaging, whether it's through the web or the app, and then I analyse this information to produce creative ideas about how we can engage more with our customers. Three is a great place to start your career because of the brand's visibility in the Irish market, sponsoring the football team, the 3 Arena, which brings the music connection and to be working as a digital marketing executive within such a well known company is a great opportunity.

How did you get your job?

My background was in another area but I wanted a change and I saw this role, as an intern with 3PLus, so I was very interested in that. I applied for the three month internship and got great exposure to the company. I gained communication skills, analytical skills and presentation skills, all of which are very important. It really prepared me for my current role.

What skills do you need to be successful?

Communication skills and multitasking are very useful. You can have a lot on at the same time so you need to be able to communicate well and prioritise to ensure jobs get done. You also need to be able to manage information, we look at the engagement levels of our customers, how they're interacting with us and we need to be able to act on this information.

What skills should students develop?

Obviously technology is very important, and to have a genuine interest in it, as it's changing so fast. For first year students I would say it's important to work on presentation skills which will give you the confidence to present to your peers in work and be innovative and creative. It's a very important skill in life, to be able to stand in front of people and give your opinions and solutions on issues.

What's the best thing about your job?

I think Three are a great company to work for, they really invest in their staff, so they want you to progress in your career and they give you the tools to be able to do that. There's a strong focus on learning and development and achiving a work/life balance, with different initiatives to promote social activities. I think the culture is great, and it's a very positive environment where you're given a lot of support. They allow you to take the responsibility if you're willing to take it, but the same time they provide to necessary guidance to ensure you're on the right path and that you're able to complete your job.
