Getting started

I have always had an interest in financial markets and investment banking, which is why I chose a career in audit, as this gives me a sound basis to understand the industry and all of its key participants.
Within financial services, I have been able to develop my knowledge across all industries from insurance, banking and
investment management. It’s a big transition between college life and work life. Before graduating, I had completed a work placement year, which provided me with invaluable experience, so within a few weeks of working at Deloitte I had settled into my role and understood what was expected of me. I completed a degree in Business Studies in DCU. The degree was relevant from a business perspective as I specialised in finance in my final year, which provided me with an understanding of financial markets. This has played a pivotal role in my continual career progression within Deloitte.

Succeeding at work

I am currently an audit manager in the Financial Services department in Deloitte, tasked with managing audits for clients. In the last four years, I have specialised almost exclusively in the investment management sector. During this time I have gained fantastic experience managing audit engagements for asset managers, funds, management companies and service providers reporting under different accounting standards. I maintain key relationships with my clients and manage numerous large audit projects.
Since joining Deloitte, I have completed my training and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. On an annual basis, I complete several training courses within Deloitte to update my technical knowledge on accounting standards and the industry in which I am specialising. I have a positive attitude to self-development, which is a standard evident through all
levels within Deloitte.
My strongest asset is my time management and organisation skills. I have been able to develop these over the last few years by managing large projects with stringent reporting deadlines. I have developed key relationships with clients and within the industry, which has helped me to win business for the firm and allowed me to develop my business development skills.

Good advice

What I would say to recent graduates looking for jobs is to make sure you understand the firm you are applying to. Research all the services they have to offer. For most applicants, a graduate position is their first introduction to the working world, so it is important to pursue a role you will enjoy. Some graduate application processes can be time consuming so give yourself plenty of time to work on your answers – make them concise and impactful.
For graduates entering the workplace, make sure to ask questions throughout your induction, training and when you are on assignment. You should also be sure to develop relationships with your team members and always show enthusiasm, regardless of how big or small a task you are assigned to complete.
