Why did you choose this industry, and this company in particular? 

I've always been interested in technology because it's constantly evolving and has such a big impact on how people work and live, but I knew I also wanted a career that involved working with people as much as systems. Accenture first caught my eye at a careers fair in Trinity College Dublin. Speaking to people on the stand, I got a sense of the variety of work, the supportive culture and the opportunities for continuous learning. What really appealed to me was the chance to combine my interest in technology with client-facing work and real-world problem-solving. It felt like a place where I could develop professionally while also building meaningful relationships and gaining experience across different industries.

Can you describe a typical day in your role? What are your favourite parts of the work you do?

My typical day is usually a mix of testing new features, investigating issues and working with developers, business analysts and clients to make sure everything works as expected. What I enjoy most is the problem-solving side of the role; you get a real sense of achievement when you uncover an issue and help get it resolved before it reaches users. I also appreciate collaborating with different teams to understand how systems and processes fit together. One of the most rewarding parts of my role is its client-facing nature, as it allows me to see the real impact of what we're delivering. Every day brings new opportunities to learn, collaborate and make a real difference, and the variety means no two days are ever quite the same.

What skills have you developed since being part of this company’s programme?

Since joining Accenture’s graduate programme, I’ve developed a wide range of both technical and professional skills. From a technical perspective, I’ve built experience in functional testing, defect management, stakeholder communication and understanding complex business processes. Just as importantly, I’ve grown in confidence when working with clients, presenting ideas and collaborating with different teams. The programme has also taught me how to manage competing priorities, adapt to new challenges on the fly and continuously learn in a fast-paced environment. One of the biggest lessons has been the value of asking questions and seeking out opportunities for yourself. Every project and interaction has helped me grow and I feel far more confident in my abilities today than when I first started.

What have been the most challenging parts of working life since taking up this programme? Is there anything you wish you knew before starting?

One of the biggest challenges for me was learning how to balance the demands of a graduate role with playing League of Ireland football for Peamount United. Both require a lot of commitment, preparation and discipline, so finding the right balance took time. There were periods where I had to be very organised and learn how to prioritise effectively to make sure I could perform both on the pitch and in work. Looking back, one thing I wish I’d known before starting is not to be afraid to ask questions. When you’re new, its easy to think you should know all the answers, but that’s simply not the case. Everyone starts somewhere. One of the things I’ve really appreciated about Accenture is how supportive people are. There’s always someone willing to help, offer guidance or share their personal experience, and that support makes a huge difference when you’re learning and growing in your career.

Would you recommend the graduate programme at this company to others? 

Absolutely. I’d recommend the graduate programme to others. One of the biggest benefits is the intensive five-week training programme at the start, which provides a strong foundation and helps ease the transition from university into the working world. From day one, you’re given real responsibility, exposure to clients and opportunities to work on meaningful projects. What stood out most to me was the support available, there’s always someone willing to answer a question or offer guidance. The programme has helped me grow both professionally and personally, while also giving me the flexibility to balance other commitments, including playing League of Ireland football. It’s a great environment to learn, challenge yourself and build your career.

What advice would you like to give to future graduates who are just starting out?

My biggest piece of advice would be to be curious, get involved and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Starting your first job can feel daunting, and it’s easy to assume everyone else has it all figured out, but the reality is that everyone is learning too. Say yes to opportunities, ask questions and make the most of everything on offer. Some of my best experiences have come from getting involved in activities outside my day-to-day role and attending the social events Accenture organises for graduates. You'll learn a huge amount from the people around you. Most importantly, be patient with yourself!
