Meet Liane, a Graduate Process Engineer in Arcadis

1. How would you best summarise your role at Arcadis?

As a Graduate Process Engineer in Arcadis, my role is to help support the execution of projects throughout their various phases, assisting the project lead with co-ordination and producing key project deliverables. I work closely with various other departments within Arcadis to ensure that the project progresses smoothly. I also communicate with clients and vendors to address technical queries to ensure that the project requirements are met. This role allows me to contribute to the success of the project, while also continuing to develop my technical knowledge and industry experience.

2. What aspects of your role do you enjoy most?

The aspect I enjoy most is the opportunity to work closely with my team members in the office and have in-depth discussions on the design of complex processes. This face-to-face collaboration has been extremely valuable for my learning and development as an engineer. As well as that, I have had numerous opportunities to visit the project site, and this has helped me gain a deeper understanding of how these processes operate in practice and allows me to see the designs I contribute to being implemented in real-life applications. This combination of office-based collaboration and onsite experience has provided me with invaluable insight into both the design and execution of engineering projects.

3. What skills or behaviours do you think you need to be successful in the role?

While technical skills are important to have to be successful, there are also various soft skills that I have found are equally as important for success in this role. Strong communication skills are necessary for collaborating with colleagues and the client, and the willingness to learn is essential for continuing to develop your own technical knowledge. Being proactive and taking initiative also ensures that tasks are progressed and completed efficiently, and any queries or difficulties are resolved.

4. What support have you had to succeed in your role?

Since starting my role, I have received a lot of support from both my line manager and my team members. My team has always been very open and approachable when I have questions and will always share their knowledge to help develop my technical understanding. My manager has also been very supportive. They regularly check in with me and schedules time to discuss my progress here in Arcadis, which also gives me the opportunity to discuss any areas I feel I require more support or guidance in.

5. What do you enjoy most about Arcadis?

What I enjoy most about Arcadis is the people and the welcoming work environment. Everyone treats each other with respect, is approachable, and is always willing to help, which creates a positive and supportive culture. I have enjoyed getting to know my colleagues and working alongside them, and I have learned a huge amount since joining. Compared to when I had first started to now, I can clearly see my growth both professionally and personally, and the support and opportunities I've been given have played a big part in that development.

6. What would your advice be to someone looking to secure a role with us?

My advice would be to be yourself, stay curious, and always be eager to learn. Show enthusiasm, ask questions, and take the initiative to get involved in projects and opportunities outside of your comfort zone. A positive attitude, willingness to learn from others, and a proactive approach are qualities that will always stand out and that others will find valuable.
