What are the main tasks in a typical week?

I am part of the professional services department at Guidewire. We understand the requirements of our clients and we help meet them using Guidewire's software products. We have a daily meeting with our team of developers, consultants, testers and analysts.

What skills do you need to be successful in your role?

The main skills you need in this role include technical skills such as coding. Guidewire's software stack is in Java so that is important. You also need technical skills in databases and SQL.

Soft skills such as good communication and time management skills are also important.

What do you love about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the people that I work with. I work with people with different backgrounds and skillsets so you get to learn something new everyday.

Your personal progress goals are frequently discussed which is also one of my favourite parts.

What did you do as a student that helps you in your career?

Developing teamwork skills is definitely important. Most of these implementation and development projects involve big teams and multiple stakeholders. Focusing on group projects and being involved in societies and clubs is a great place to start.

What was your career break?

I pursued a master's in computer science at Trinity College and I wanted to build a career in technology consulting. I heard about Guidewire from gradireland's website and their software consultant position really appealed to me. I went through multiple interview stages. Some of the rounds were technical and others assessed my cultural fit.

Guidewire's internal training programme and the mentor they assigned me really helped me ease into my job.
