Meet Matthew: On Allianz’s General Insurance Graduate Programme

Q: What motivated you to join the General Insurance Graduate Program at Allianz?

I joined the General Insurance Graduate Program at Allianz after graduating with a Bachelor of Business from the University of Limerick in 2023. Having completed an internship at an insurer, I was eager to gain a comprehensive view of the insurance industry and learn about the various functions and roles available. 

Q: How has the rotational element of the program benefited your career development?

The rotational elements of the programme have allowed me to work in our claims department, sales area, and most recently, as a financial lines underwriter in our Chicago office. Working on strategic projects as part of the program provided me with deeper insights into these areas than I would have gained in an entry-level position. Moreover, I was granted more autonomy, which helped me develop leadership skills that have given me a strong start to my career.

Q: What is your experience working at Allianz?

Allianz is a fantastic place to work. As part of the graduate programme, I started alongside ten other graduates, and I have made some lifelong friends as we have worked together and moved around the business. The social aspect of working in an organization that genuinely cares about its employees is one of the greatest parts of working for Allianz.

Additionally, as part of the General Insurance Graduate Program, I had the opportunity to travel to Chicago for six months and work with the financial lines team. During my time there, I was entrusted with managing accounts, conducting research on clients, and learning how we price risks, acquiring skills that have positioned me well for my next role, all while enjoying the experience of living in a major US city!
