Vincent Moore, Business Analyst Associate, Glanbia

What does your job involve?

Our day is very diverse. I work in finance planning on the business intelligence team, collecting and exporting data and then using it for financial reporting. That’s a key aspect of Glanbia and any company that is an inside led organisation.

What skills are important to be successful?

People have an idea of IT guys being locked away in a room where some sort of magic happens and they come back with the finished product, but it’s very much about people skills and communication skills. Those are the skills I tried to focus on in college, especially coming from a background of business and innovation.

What do you love about your job?

The diversity of the role is great. I’ve been lucky enough to have been afforded the opportunity to travel to the US this year as part of a secondment. Working on a global scale, it really becomes tangible just how effective globalisation is. What we do in Kilkenny has a worldwide effect in terms of business intelligence, data and finance planning.

What advice would you give a first year student?

If I was a fresher again I would tell myself to be more curious. Don’t just focus on what’s in a textbook; businesses move much faster than that, constantly evolving in a way that universities and colleges probably can’t keep up with. Do some outside reading. If you’re interested in IT you will probably enjoy reading magazines, newspapers, websites – the world is your oyster.
