Inside BNY Mellon: Graduate Opportunities
It was during a careers talk during my final year of college that I first became aware of graduate opportunities at BNY Mellon.
At the time, I was finishing my honours degree in Business and Management at Cork Institute of Technology and researching various graduate roles. The employees from BNY Mellon spoke about the varied opportunities across the company’s three locations in Ireland (Cork, Dublin and Wexford). I was inspired by their professionalism and evident passion for their work and so I applied for an administrator role in the Fund Accounting department in Cork.
When I was offered the position after the interview process I was excited to start although a little daunted at the prospect of joining such a large organisation globally, and one that has such an important role in the financial services industry. I need not have worried though, from the first day in the office I was warmly welcomed and quickly felt part of the team. From the start, I was struck by how everyone’s opinion and suggestions are actively sought and welcome regardless of job title or seniority. There is a very inclusive culture and a collaborative approach to problem solving, with everyone ultimately driving to deliver excellence, every day.
There are lots of opportunities to progress your career and expand your network within the organisation. From more formal programmes such as job shadowing, mentoring, career mobility programmes and preparation for professional qualifications through to more informal or self-service tools such as online training resources and networking events. Within two years of joining I was promoted to an Investment Analyst role within the Investment Trust team in Cork. The process of moving teams was seamless and as part of the transition I spent time in London for training, which was beneficial from both a knowledge-building and networking perspective.
The office in Cork has a friendly environment; there is always lots going on and everyone is focused on ensuring we continuously improve and deliver service excellence to our clients and internal stakeholders. As a result there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in different projects. Some of which I have contributed to have really helped to enhance my knowledge and understanding of tasks and roles which fall outside the scope of my day to day responsibilities.
All of our offices in Ireland have a number of thriving employee resource groups that provide all employees with support and opportunities to connect around a shared purpose. We are also fortunate to have paid volunteering time to help make a positive impact within our local communities. Participating in these aspects of company life has enabled me to meet a more diverse set of work colleagues and people in our local community, improving not only my professional skills but also my interpersonal skills, broadening my perspectives both at work and in my home life.
