Niamh Lyons, Software Application Engineer, Workday

So what does a normal week look like for you?

In a normal week I would be involved in working on developing and building applications for our payroll software. I would also have regular meetings to analyse future work and productivity and I’d also conduct code reviews, which means validating and reviewing the code for approval.

What skills do you need to be successful in your job?

There are three key skills I would identify. The first would be problem solving-every day you’re facing new problems and challenges so it’s fundamental that you have a problem-solving outlook. The next would be initiative-Workday really rewards those that come with their own solutions and initiatives when it comes to problems. It’s an environment that’s great for those with that mindset. The last would be communication, there are a lot of meetings here in terms of the different projects we are working on and it helps if you can communicate clearly with the different people and teams who you work with.

What do you love about your job?

I really enjoy the culture here at Workday, it’s a very friendly place to work. From the receptionist when I come in every morning, to the team around my desk during our morning catchup, there is a great emphasis on making this a welcoming and friendly place in which to work. The company also invest in both your personal and professional development and I couldn’t think of a more welcoming place in which to work.

How did you get into your job?

I think it was the experiences I gained on internships that made an impact in terms of my application in particular.
